Getting a head start can be one of the most important factors in running a successful business. A program created by the Guardian Life Insurance Company is attempting to give girls a chance to do just that.
The Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Program was developed 10 years ago by Guardian as a way to give girls aged 12 to 18 the opportunity to learn about being both entrepreneurs and financially independent.
This year, eight Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Conferences will be held across the country. During the conferences, girls are partnered with business women from the area who help guide various activities.
For example, an exercise called "Product in a Box" gives the girls the chance to create a product and then produce a marketing plan.
"This conference provides an amazing opportunity for teen girls to learn from successful women business-owners who can inspire them to pursue entrepreneurial ambitions," Kathy Readinger, who heads the program for Guardian, said.
Along with providing activities and access to area businesswomen, Guardian awards a total of $30,000 annually in cash prizes to 15 girls who exhibit both entrepreneurial skill and an interest in serving their communities. The prizes are intended to help girls pay for college or pursue their business goals.
