And when it comes time for small business owners and entrepreneurs to cast their votes, they will do so with the economy and jobs foremost in mind, according to a new poll.
The George Washington University Graduate School of Political Management recently released a study that said 40 percent of small business owner respondents named both the economy and jobs as their most important considerations when voting. And, in a surprising contradiction to the recent focus on taxes, only 3 percent said tax policy was their most important issue, just above foreign policy and national security. Taxes didn't fare much better, even when considering economic issues, with less than 6 percent responding that it's a top concern.
Responses were also in line with recent sentiments toward Capitol Hill: Ethics, honesty and corruption in government were jointly identified as the second-most important factor. Individual state reactions also reflected ongoing issues in their areas, as voters in the swing state of Wisconsin said governmental ethics was a top factor.
In terms of economic policy, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has hedged his presidential bets on being a businessman concentrated on turning around the economy, but entrepreneurs polled seemed less than convinced. Thirty-nine percent of entrepreneurs said Democratic candidate and current President Barack Obama is the most supportive of small business owners, while 31 percent said Romney and 28 percent were left unsure.
However, the president's perceived advantage doesn't hold as strong when considering his landmark action of healthcare reform. Only 20 percent of small business owners said Obama's healthcare policy would help their business, while 40 percent voiced the opposite.

"It's nice to see confidence not shrinking, but there isn't much to hang your hat on in this report. We are back to where we were in May 2012. Two good months don't make a trend, but we can't have a trend without them, so it's a start," said Dunkelberg. Moreover, there were some concerning statistics in the NFIB's latest index. The Huntsville Times reports that job creation remained "flat after five months of increases," showing that some SMB owners are struggling to expand. Overall, the index shows that entrepreneurs believe conditions are improving for independent companies.
