Some weddings are more formal than others and the style and wording of your wedding invitations will often reflect your preference.
Regardless of the level of formality, however, there are always good...and bad...wedding invitation practices to be aware of.
Wedding Invitation Do's

• Do invite the partners of guests who are married, engaged, or living with a significant other. Try to find out their name and include it on the invitation.
• Do send unmarried couples living together one invitation, where their names are listed in alphabetical order and on their own lines. (Guests living together as roommates, not as couples, should each receive their own invitation.)
• Do spell out dates, times and states (half after four o’clock in the
evening, not 4:30 pm; and the twenty-second of April, not April 22)
• Do put return postage on envelopes for your response cards.
• Do send wedding invitations at least six weeks before the big day. Order custom wedding invitations at least three to four months in advance to ensure they go out on time.
• Do abbreviate Mr. and Mrs., but spell out the title Doctor.
• Do send a seperate invitation to children over the age of 18 still living with their parents.
• Do publicize wedding registry information by word of mouth only.
Wedding Invitation Don'ts

• Don’t use punctuation on the invitation, except after abbreviations and
between the city and state.
• Don’t print “and Guest” on the outer wedding invitation envelope to
indicate to a single friend that he/she may bring a date, as this looks
awkward. Print it on the inner envelope holding the actual wedding
invitation instead.
• Don’t print “no children” on the invite if you’re planning an adults only
reception. Simply address each invitation explicitly to your intended
guests (i.e. Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, not “The Smiths”).
• Don’t print registry information on the wedding invitation.
• Don’t forget to invite your officiant and his/her spouse to the reception.
• Don’t include an RSVP card for invitations to a ceremony only (by the
way, it’s only proper to send invites to only the ceremony if there will NOT be a reception).

Wedding invitations and wedding stationery are important in setting the tone for, and personality of, your big day.
But as important as the wedding invitations are, there are many other facets that work together to create the perfect wedding.
Use this checklist to help sort it all out!
16-9 Months Before
Start a wedding folder or binder to help you stay organized.
Extend an invitation to the people you would like to include in your wedding party. (i.e. bridesmaids, groomsmen, etc...)
Determine a budget.
Determine a head count, and make a guest list. A spreadsheet works best with columns for names, addresses, RSVPs, etc...
Book dates and venues for your ceremony and reception.
Now's a great time to start researching photographers, bands/DJs, florists, caterers and bakeries.
Book your officiant.
If you like, throw an engagement party.
Start shopping for Wedding Invitations, RSVP Cards and Wedding Save the Dates.

8 Months Before
Book the photographer and/or videographer.
Book the entertainment.
Hire a caterer early this month, or next.
Select several hotels, with different price points, and book a block of rooms at each for out-of-town guests.
Purchase a dress. The ordering process and fittings typically take several months.
Register for gifts. Choose a minimum of three retailers and remember that your guests will use these for shower and engagement gifts too.
Purchase your Save the Dates. Wedding Save the Dates are a great way of giving your out-of-town guests plenty of time to plan their trip.
If you are planning on having a wedding website now's the time to launch it!

7-6 Months Before
Order your custom wedding invitations, response cards and other wedding stationery.
Send Save the Dates.
Shop for the bridesmaids' dresses. Try to allow at least six months for the gowns to be ordered and sized.
Book your florist
If you're planning on alternate transportation, such as a limo or a town car, book it now.
Start planning your honeymoon and check that your passports are up-to-date if you plan on leaving the country.
Plan your ceremony, meet with your officiant and obtain all of the official documents that you will need for the wedding.
Start scheduling the events of the day of, including a timeline.

5-4 Months Before
Book a rehearsal and rehearsal dinner venue.
Order your wedding cake.
Choose songs for your first dance, the father/daughter dance, etc...
Purchase shoes and start your dress fittings - remember to take the shoes with you to the fittings so that the dress can be hemmed properly.
Schedule hair and makeup appointments. You may want to have a few test-runs/trials before you decide on a style.

3 Months Before
Order wedding favors.
Order programs, menu cards, place cards, and direction cards.
Purchase the wedding bands.
Finalize your menu and flowers.
Finalize your ceremony. Determine all readings, vows, songs, etc...
Order rehearsal dinner invitations - bridal shower invitations can be re-worded for this.

2 Months Before
Send the invitations 6-8 weeks before the wedding. The RSVP cutoff should be three weeks after the postmark date.
Meet or speak with your photographer about shots and locations.
Review the playlist with your band or DJ.
Contact all of your vendors to ensure that they have all of the information they need and to ensure that they have the correct schedule.
Submit a newspaper wedding announcement.

2 Months Before
Mail the rehearsal dinner invitations.
Enter RSVPs into your spreadsheet.
Plan your reception table seating. It's helpful to sketch out tables on a large piece of paper or poster board.
Touch base with your caterer once you have a final head count.
Send out as many final payments as possible.
Confirm times with all vendors.
Purchase bridesmaids' gifts.
Now's a good time for that final cut and color if your hair is in need.
The Week of the Wedding
Make arrangements to pick-up your dress or have it delivered if it hasn't been already.
Reconfirm times with all of your vendors.
Send a timeline to your bridal party; include contact information. It may also be helpful to delegate point people to handle the vendors if they need anything.
Organize tips in envelopes for the vendors and also any checks that you may owe them.
Book any spa treatments, manicures or pedicures for the day before the wedding.
Break in your shoes - a couple days in advance would be best.
Pack for your honeymoon!
